Why solution chemistry?

Serious discrepancies between published thermodynamic parameters of chemical reactions are well-known while the field is often considered as ‘old-fashioned’. At the same time, these parameters are needed in many fields to predict the behaviour of chemical elements in environmental, biological or industrial systems. How to tackle some of the uncertainties that currently restrict the chemical modeling of aqueous, multicomponent mixtures will be discussed in this workshop through their application to TCEs. The issues involved in the election of the parameters needed to describe trace element binding by natural organic matter, a key factor when evaluating element behaviour and ecotoxicty in environmental systems, will be the object of the second half of the workshop.
